Frequently Asked Questions
Getting started
-
- Q:
- How can I buy Maps Booster?
- A:
Maps Booster is only available in the Nokia Ovi store. Click on the purchase tab at the top of this page to go to the Ovi store. Maps Booster can be found in the "applications" section of the store under "city guides / maps."
-
- Q:
- Which programs will Maps Booster work with?
- A:
In short, Maps Booster will work with any app on your phone that finds your location including Nokia Maps, Facebook, Lifecasting with Ovi, Google Maps, GyPSii and more.
-
- Q:
- How do I install Maps Booster?
- A:
After you have downloaded Maps Booster from the Ovi Store, the install should start automatically. If it does not, or if you need to re-install Maps Booster, open the folder you downloaded the file to (usually the "download" folder in your phone's memory) and double click on MapsBooster.sisx to start the install.
-
- Q:
- How can I tell that Maps Booster is working?
- A:
All of your map or location applications will be finding your location more accurately and quickly. You can also open the Maps Booster application (found under the Apps section on your phone) to view a latitude and longitude value on the "Position" tab.
-
- Q:
- Do I need to open the Maps Booster application and keep it running in the background?
- A:
Not at all. The Maps Booster positioning technology is implemented as a Symbian positioning method that sits in the background, and is only activated for the period when an application is actually requesting location. The Maps Booster application is intended for configuration and verification that our software is finding a location at your current position.
-
- Q:
- Can I add the location of my wireless router (home/work) to your system so I can increase coverage in those areas?
- A:
If you are in our coverage area then you do not usually need to do this. But, it is possible using the following steps: first, you need to know the MAC address of your wireless network. You can find it by using iStumbler on Apple OSX, or Metageek's inSSIDer on Microsoft Windows. Both applications are free and will display a list of Wi-Fi networks containing a column called "MAC Address." Find the MAC address in the line containing the name of your Wi-Fi network. Finally, submit that MAC address to Skyhook using our submission form.
-
- Q:
- How can I temporarily disable Maps Booster?
- A:
Maps Booster is implemented as a positioning method and can simply be unchecked there. In newer phones you can go to Applications->Location->Positioning->Positioning Methods to find a list of positioning methods, while for older models you can go to Tools->Settings->General->Positioning->Positioning Methods. Please consult your phone's user manual If you cannot find the positioning methods settings.
-
- Q:
- How do I reinstall Maps Booster?
- A:
Open the "Ovi Store" application on your phone, log into your Ovi account via Options->Account, and then go to the "My stuff" tab. Select "Maps Booster" and choose "Download."
-
- Q:
- How do I uninstall Maps Booster?
- A:
Select the Maps Booster icon and use Options->Remove. On newer Symbian versions you can also use a tool called the "Application Manager," which you can find in the Settings folder.

Experiencing Issues with Maps Booster
-
- Q:
- I cannot get a location fix in the Maps Booster position tab
- A:
Not all positioning methods work at all times. For example, GPS does not work indoors, and for Maps Booster to work you have to be in Skyhook's coverage area. Check our coverage map for more detail, and try several locations in your area. Also, verify that you have network connectivity by opening a web browser and loading a web page. Then, check your connection setting in the Maps Booster application. You may have picked a wireless access point that is currently not available. We suggest choosing your cell service provider's data connection, assuming you are aware of the associated carrier charges, but using "Always Ask," or "Easy WLAN," are also viable options to establish a data connection.
-
- Q:
- How do I minimize usage of my carrier's cell data connection?
- A:
You can control Maps Booster's access to the internet via the application's "Connection" tab. On newer Nokia phones, like the N97, you have an "Internet" destination, where you can give a higher priority to Wi-Fi access points at home, or in the office, than to the carrier's cell data network. This means that the phone will attempt to use known Wi-Fi access points for the data connection when available, and use the cell data network otherwise. To do this you will have to configure the phone's "Destinations" which you can access via Settings>Connectivity>Destinations>Internet. There are multiple articles on the web that explain how to do this. Once done you can simply choose the "Internet" destination in the Maps Booster's connection tab field named "Access Point." There may be some impact on how quickly Symbian establishes a data connection when you use this method.
