Skyhook Announces New Location SDK 4.4 Release

Upgraded SDK now includes new geofencing API, improved platform support, and more power efficiency

Boston, MA - February 17, 2012 - Skyhook, the world leader in location information, context and intelligence, today upgraded the publicly available Skyhook Location SDK to include a new geofencing API, improved platform support (including the new Kindle Fire device) and more power efficiency when using longer periods between location requests. Developers can now offer geofencing in their apps, enabling detection when a user enters or leaves a pre-defined area. This can be useful for a number of use cases including: changing settings or disabling ring tones when at work or home; offering a promotion when a user reaches a certain store; sending a notification to Mom when daughter leaves school; reminding user to call their boss when they get to work tomorrow morning; or alerting an IT manager that a particular device has been removed from the building (possibly stolen).

Improved platform support is another main feature of the new SDK 4.4 release. Support for Android Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich have been added, including support for Kindle Fire. The current version of the Kindle Fire does not provide any location services natively. However, any Android app that uses Skyhook will automatically work on the Kindle Fire without any changes. This is a big advantage for developers who might otherwise not be able to offer their apps on that device.

Power efficiency has also been greatly improved in this release. When using longer periods between location requests (greater than 20 seconds), apps are now able to check location periodically, all day, without draining the device battery.
