In our blog series, Skyhook Behind the Scenes, we want to highlight and show appreciation for some of the people at Skyhook who are behind the scenes powering our technology. These technology experts have helped Skyhook continue to be a leader in location technology and intelligence. The second Skyhooker we want to highlight in this series is Evan Sapienza, a member of the Engineering team. 

Evan grew up in Fairfield County, CT and moved to Boston to pursue a degree in Computer Engineering at Boston University. He joined Skyhook in May 2014 after completing his degree. Since then, Evan has been a Software Engineer working on Personas and Geospatial Insights.

Here’s more about Evan:

I have always enjoyed tinkering around and building things ever since I was little. As a kid I was obsessed with building things out of Legos and I think that feeling of taking something in my head and making it real carried over into wanting to do the same thing with computer programs.

I didn’t actually start writing computer programs until late in high school, but I found it highly rewarding to be able to write a program and then magically see the result on the computer screen. I found it both fun and addicting to take an idea and then try and implement it in code. It is something I still find fun today!

When did you start working at Skyhook?

I started working at Skyhook after graduating from Boston University in May of 2014.

What attracted you to work at Skyhook?

I think the main factors for why I decided to work for Skyhook were both the incredible talent of the engineering team and the openness and friendliness of everyone I met during my interviews. I felt that it would be more than a job, but also a place where I could grow my career and get to work with a lot of interesting technologies.

What has been a big highlight in your career since you started at Skyhook?

One of my biggest highlights would probably be getting to work on the core technology that powers Personas and Geospatial Insights. Working on that technology was my first experience with processing big data at a large scale, and I have enjoyed working on all the cool features and improvements that have gone into it since joining that team.

What is your favorite part about your job and working at Skyhook?

My favorite part about my job is the varied and interesting problems that I am faced with every day. There are some tough engineering problems that we've tackled here and I have enjoyed contributing to the solutions of some of those problems along with an incredible team.

Where do you see the location data industry in 10 years?

I think location data is only going to become more valuable in the coming years. Many more devices are adding the ability to derive location, and the IoT space is going to continue to grow. The market for insights and analysis on that location data is continuing to grow as well. Companies want to understand their users at a deeper level and I think location is at the core of getting those answers.

What’s a fun fact about yourself?

I have a identical twin brother working in Boston as well. He has actually attended a few Skyhook events and it is always funny seeing the reactions people have to seeing us together!

Where’s your favorite place or restaurant to go in Boston?

This is a tough one! I have many favorites but at the top of my list would be Sweet Cheeks Q in Fenway, Zaftigs Delicatessen in Coolidge Corner and Anchovies on Columbus Ave. (they have this menu item called ‘Italian Nachos’ which sounds like craziness but it is really, really good).

As far as places, the MFA is one of my favorites. There is always something new to see every time I go there.

What do you do for fun in your free time?

I like to exercise, play the guitar, play board games with my friends, see movies, and every now and then do even more programming just for fun.
